UDMA-7 and UHS-1 Memory Cards

UDMA-7/UHS-1 Media Card Study

UDMA-7/UHS-1 Media Card Analysis

(Updated: 11/20/2013)

The purpose of this study is to perform a hands-on comparison of UDMA-7 CF cards and UHS-1 SD cards.  This study includes one card from each manufacturer of every UDMA-7 CF card sold by Adorama as well as one card from each manufacturer of every UHS-1 card sold by Adorama:

  1. Lexar 32GB CompactFlash Memory Card Professional 1000x
  2. SanDisk 32GB CompactFlash Memory Card Extreme Pro 600x UDMA
  3. Transend 32GB CompactFlash Memory Card Ultimate 1000x UDMA
  4. Delkin 32GB CF 1050X UDMA 7 Cinema Memory Card
  5. Sony 32GB SDHC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory Card
  6. SanDisk 32 GB SDHC Memory Card Extreme Pro Class 10 UHS-I
  7. Delkin Devices 32GB SDHC Memory Card Elite 633x UHS-I

Note:  Professional Canon and Nikon DSLR’s generally do not support Ultra-High Speed, UHS-1, SD cards.  The Nikon D3x and Canon 1Dx have dual CF card slots, the NIkon D4 supports CF and XQD, the Nikon D800E does support SD and CF, while the Canon 5D Mark III has a CF and SD slot with a caveat:  According to the “Canon EOS 5D Mark III Instruction Manual” page 32:

  • Although the camera does not comply with the UHS (Ultra-High Speed) speed class standard, UHS SDHC/SDXC cards can be used.
  • Ultra DMA (UDMA) CF cards can also be used with the camera.  UDMA CF cards enable faster data writing.

Rob Galbraith did an excellent job of documenting this issue in his CF/SD/XQD Performance Database.

All media were tested using the following equipment:

Readers:

Computer:  15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display and 2.6 GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 processor.  16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM and 768GB Flash Storage.

Software:  Blackmagicdesign Disk Speed Test Version 2.2.

Methodology:

Each card was tested 20 times in each reader for write and read throughput.  The testing yielded 200 results for each CF card, 100 write results and 100 read results.   The testing yielded 240 results for each SD card, 120 write results and 120 read results.

  • Average Write Speed averaging all test results in MBytes/sec
  • Average Read Speed averaging all test results in MBytes/sec
  • Maximum Write Speed over all test results in MBytes/sec
  • Maximum Read Speed over all test results in MBytes/sec
  • Minimum Write Speed measured over all test results in MBytes/sec
  • Minimum Read Speed measured over all test results in MBytes/sec
  • Median Write Speed the middle test result over all test results in MBytes/sec
  • Median Read Speed the middle test result over all test results in MBytes/sec
  • Write Mode:  Most frequently occurring write speed over all 100 results (or 120 results for SD cards) in MBytes/sec.
  • Read Mode:  Most frequently occurring read speed over all 100 results (or 120 results for SD cards) in MBytes/sec.
  • Cost in US dollars.

Buy the Lexar Professional 32GB 1000x UDMA-7 card, it plays well on all of the card readers and got the highest scores on most measures of central tendency for writing.  Although the Delkin CF card took top honors in reading, Lexar still wins in writing which has the highest priority for this study.
